This jewelry box has ample space for earrings, cuff links, necklaces, watches. The one tray has ten padded inserts for rings, earrings, and cuff links.

The Black Limba in this box has a spectacular grain pattern and rich colours. The top is made of Brazilian Rosewood, framed by bands of Black Limba which are separated and defined by strips of black veneer.

Brazilian Rosewood, also called jacaranda, is perhaps one of the most beautiful woods in the world. However, extensive harvesting over the past three centuries has virtually eliminated this tree from the Brazilian forests, so that today it is not supposed to be harvested. The only material that can be sold legally is old stock. Needless to say, it is very pricey today.

I ran across this small board nearly 20 years ago while perusing the off-cut bin at a local mill. It sat, forgotten, in my stash of unique woods until I recently rediscovered it while cleaning up and reorganizing my space.

Except for black veneer, no stains or dyes have been used. The rich colours that you see are the natural colours of the finished woods.

The sides of the box are made from a single board with waterfall mitre joints. That allows the natural pattern of the wood grain to flow all the way around the box. Grain is matched on three corners.

Mitred corners reinforced with Black Walnut keys.

Top is made from solid woods into an assembly about 1/2" (13 mm) thick. It is then re-sawn into two pieces about 1/8" (3mm) thick which are laminated to both sides of 1/4" (6 mm) plywood. This construction not only makes the interior of the top as attractive as the exterior, but also prevents warping of the top.
